Age: 17

Always lived in Birmingham?: Yes

High School: Mountain Brook High School

What’s your favorite subject in school?: My favorite subject in school is English because I love to write. Even though most high schoolers dread research projects, I love learning about something new and finding an interesting way to present it.

What interests you about technology?: Technology interests me because it’s always changing. When working with technology you can guarantee that every day could be filled learning something new.

Do you plan to go to college? Where? What will you study?: I plan to go to college next year, but I am not certain where. Right now, my favorites are Northeastern, Wake Forest, and Auburn. Once there, I hope to follow the business track and try some different classes to see what interests me.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself.: Even though I am from Birmingham, a lot of my family is from Massachusetts, and every summer of my life I’ve spent 2 months at a family lake house there. I love New England weather, and I hope to live in Boston one day.

Girls Day of Code a Huge Success!

2920777

On Saturday August 8th, 40 girls between the ages of 10 and 17 gathered at Birmingham’s technology incubator, Innovation Depot, to learn more about computer science, video game programing using  Scratch, the importance of using logic when telling a robot to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and how Kathy Pham, part of the White House’s U.S. Digital Services group became a programmer in college and how she went from working at Google to the White House.

The Birmingham chapter of 100 Girls of Code was formed  in June and we quickly received emails from over 60 volunteers looking to help the organization achieve the goal of offering free web development and programming workshops to 100 girls, or more, a year, in the Birmingham region.

The August 8th event was the first one offered in Birmingham and was part of a national event, Girls Day of Code, which included simultaneous events in 7 states, as well as Ireland and Costa Rica.  The workshops were live-streamed via WebEx and the girls got to see other girls programming in cities and countries like Atlanta, Portland, and Costa Rica at the same time they were building their video games.

The 20 volunteers that helped make the day a success work for local companies like CTS, BBVACompass, IBM,Leapfrog Systems, Malcovery Mspark,Regions, Viperline Solutions to name a few. One volunteer even drove from Huntsville to participate.  Not all the women who volunteered are developers, but all share one passion in common, inspiring girls to reach their full potential and show them how learning to program can expand their opportunities.

Our awesome volunteers!

All programs are led by female software developers to help show young girls what they can do if they are interested, and to raise awareness about the career opportunities in tech available to them when they get older.

Students learning from the instructor

ITAC Solutions provided computers for girls who did not have their own as well as sponsored the event, providing each girl with a t-shirt, a certificate and a workbook.

The next workshop is planned for October 3rd and will be at the McWane Science Center. Our goal is to get at least 100 girls there for a full day (8 am -4 pm) workshop focused on video game development and web programming. Click here to register for the Oct. 3rd event!

SWEET HOME ALABAMA: 100 GIRLS OF CODE OPENS BIRMINGHAM CHAPTER

2920777

PRESS RELEASE FROM 100 GIRLS OF CODE
The 100 Girls of Code initiative has expanded into 16 chapters across the United States since January. We are proud to partner withTechBirmingham and Birmingham Women in Technology to open our first chapter in Alabama! Jennifer Skjellum, President of TechBirmingham, sees 100 Girls of Code helping to address an access gap and a future skills gap in the Birmingham region. “At its heart this program is about providing inspiration and access for young girls who might not otherwise be encouraged or able to pursue programming or STEM activities. Working with local companies, other organizations and members of our Birmingham Women in Technology (BWIT) group we are excited to be able to provide girls the opportunity to learn how to program and in one day see the results of their hard work. Long term, we see this program as a way to help address the diversity and skills gap in our region by nurturing girls and young women to pursue technology based careers.”

Our organization is excited about impacting young women in across the U.S. and beyond. Stay tuned for more announcements coming next week!

Q&A with Greg Wingo, our new Member Services Manager

Between a full calendar of events to a growing list of members, March has kicked off as quite an exciting month for the TechBirmingham community (and it’s not even officially spring yet!). This month also brings a great new addition to the TechBirmingham team — Greg Wingo. Greg joins us as our Member Services Manager, meaning he’s our go-to guy when it comes to member acquisition, retention and services as well as  organizational marketing + communications. He’s no stranger to the tech community either — he joins us following a two-year stint as the Director of Business Development at Instagift.

Read on to get to know a little more about Greg and what he has to offer our community.

GregWingoHeadshotHometown: Born and raised in Birmingham. Minus my college years in Tuscaloosa and a stint in Montgomery, I’ve lived here my entire life.

What do you love about living + working in the Magic City?  I could write a novel on this subject, but a couple of the things I love most are the restaurant scene and the outdoor/park areas. I love hitting up the new, locally-owned restaurants in town on any given weekend. As an outdoor enthusiast, you will often find me on some trail in one of the many parks in our region. These two things alone make Birmingham an absolutely great place to live.

What opportunities excite you the most about this job with TechBirmingham? I’m excited to continue the growth of this great organization. There are so many businesses out there that would greatly benefit from being a part of this organization and I’m thrilled to be able to get many of them on board.

What is your perspective of today’s tech scene in Bham? What opportunities do you see in the future? There’s no doubt the tech scene is growing but we certainly have some opportunities for improvement. Finding, cultivating and retaining tech talent might be the most important opportunity in the near future. We certainly have a great city that can easily attract talent if we do a good job of promoting it.

Any random fun facts we need to know? My longest running distance to date is 100 miles on the Pinhoti trail in east Alabama.

When he’s not spending hours running on a trail, Greg spends his free time hanging out in the Crestwood community with his wife, Brooks, and their son, Shepard. Connect with him online:  Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram
